Manchester City midfielder Jack Byrne joins Blackburn Rovers on loan

Manchester City midfielder Jack Byrne has joined Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old, who joined City when he was 15, spent last season on loan with Dutch club SC Cambuur, scoring four goals in 27 games.

He has played for the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level and was called up to train with the senior side ahead of Euro 2016 but did not make the final squad for France.

Byrne is yet to make an appearance for City's first team but is highly-regarded and signed a three-year contract with the club 12 months ago.

"I'm absolutely delighted and I cannot wait to get started," he said on the Blackburn website. "I know even when the fixtures came out the other day, I was looking at them and you get excited and you get a little tingle in your stomach.

"I've had that feeling since I spoke to Owen [Coyle] and since he asked me to come and play. It was a no-brainer for me straight away.

"It's an unbelievable club, which has won the Premier League, so hopefully I can help the boys out and we can kick on this season."

Byrne becomes Blackburn's fifth signing of the summer following the appointment of former Bolton Wanderers and Houston Dynamo boss Coyle.
