Neil Kilkenny joins Melbourne City from Preston North End

Melbourne City have signed former Socceroos midfielder Neil Kilkenny for the next two A-League seasons.

The 30-year-old began training under John van 't Schip on Monday after arriving from Preston North End, having played more than 300 games during his 12-year career in England.

"I have always wanted to challenge myself in the A-League and this move has come at the perfect time," Kilkenny said.

"I'm excited to be playing for a team that plays a certain style of football; I'm looking forward to the challenge and the adventure and everything that surrounds this move and I can't wait to start."

Kilkenny, who has played 14 games for Australia, is City's eighth signing for the 2016-17 season and the club is still expected to secure the services of Socceroos star Tim Cahill.

"We have followed Neil's progress and believe he is the type of player who can fit into our system and execute the way we want to play," van 't Schip said.
