Selangor could join Kelantan and pull out of 2017 Malaysia Super League

Selangor have become the latest team to announce their possible exit from the 2017 Malaysia Super League (MSL).

A couple of the club's star players swiftly exited the powerhouse who have yet to secure any funds for the new season.

"Without funds, it will be difficult for us to continue. If there are no funds, we are considering the possibility of pulling out of the league," Selangor vice-president Datuk Subahan Kamal told Stadium Astro on Tuesday.

The Red Giants could follow in the footsteps of Kelantan, who are most likely to pull out of the MSL after failing to find funds for the 2017 campaign.

The Red Warriors will confirm their league status after an extraordinary general meeting on Dec. 29.

Selangor are in a similar sinking ship, with barely anything in their coffers after their state government decided against funding the team following internal politicking with the executive board members.

But the 33-time Malaysia Cup champions are still habouring hopes of getting funds from the state government.

Deputy-president Datuk Mokhtar Ahmad is set to meet president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in hopes of getting RM15 million, the minimum sum required to compete in the league.

"This cannot be delayed anymore. I will meet with the president. He cannot distance himself, he is after all the president of the association. I will talk to him, no issues," said Mokthar.

Because of their predicament, the Klang Valley giants have turned into a major shopping cart for other teams.

Former captain Shahrom Kalam became the latest player to leave through the doors, following after midfielder Hafiz Kamal who both left for Perak.

Earlier in the month their star striker Ahmad Hazwan Bakri was snapped up by defending MSL champions Johor Darul Ta'zim, along with Nazmi Faiz.

Three of their four foreigners have also departed. Mauro Olivi and Ugo Ukah have been released, while Patrick "Ronaldinho" Wleh returned to parent club PKNS FC.

Indonesia's injured winger Andik Vermansyah remains the only import left.

Even if Selangor do end up playing in the top-tier next season, they will be made up of largely youngsters, roped in from the President Cup.

Selangor fans have tried to revive the team's flagging fortunes by attempting to initiate a fan-ownership takeover, but could be hard pressed for time to find the huge sum required
