Roman Weidenfeller signs one-year extension at Borussia Dortmund

Roman Weidenfeller has signed a contract extension at Borussia Dortmund and put pen to paper on a new one-year deal at the Westfalenstadion.

Weidenfeller, 36, has been at the club since 2002 but lost his place in goal to Roman Burki in 2015. The former Germany international, who won the 2014 World Cup, has been BVB's reserve keeper ever since, and it had been unclear whether he would continue his career at Dortmund with his deal expiring this summer.

"I made a conscious decision to stay at my club for another year," Weidenfeller said on the club's official website. "I want to continue supporting Roman Burki in his development and on top of that want to help groom a young keeper.

"I want to soak every single emotional moment in black and yellow in until the end of the 2017-18 season, and would love to begin with it on May 27 in Berlin [the day of the German cup final]."

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc called Weidenfeller a "role model" and insisted that "he is still a strong keeper."

Zorc added: "Roman has been an important member of the BVB family for over a decade. We are delighted that he wants to stand between the BVB posts for another year."

Weidenfeller has made over 450 competitive appearances for Dortmund in all competitions, and has played for the club in a total of 347 Bundesliga games, the second most in BVB's history after Zorc, who played in 463 league games from 1981 through to 1998.
