LA Galaxy sign ex-Willem II right-back Pele van Anholt - sources

The LA Galaxy have signed right-back Pele van Anholt, multiple sources have confirmed to ESPN FC. The news could be made official as soon as Tuesday.

Van Anholt, 26, was out of contract, having seen his deal with Eredivisie side Willem II expire at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

During his solitary season at the Tilburg club, Van Anholt made 24 league and cup appearances, providing one assist.

Prior to his stint with Willem II, Van Anholt was on the books of SC Heerenveen, where he spent six seasons, scoring two goals in 149 league and cup appearances. During that period he spent a season on loan at Dutch second-tier side FC Emmen.

The move sees the Galaxy acquire some badly needed help at the position. Los Angeles was able to acquire Van Anholt as a replacement for Robbie Rogers, who was placed on the season-ending injury list just prior to the close of the primary transfer window in May.

The Galaxy will receive salary budget relief because Van Anholt agreed to terms before the closing of the primary transfer window.

Rogers was sidelined due to complications from offseason surgery on his left ankle. In Rogers' absence, manager Curt Onalfo has used several players at the position this season, including Rafael Garcia, Bradley Diallo, and Nathan Smith.
