Real Salt Lake sign former QPR defender Nedum Onuoha

Real Salt Lake signed veteran English defender Nedum Onuoha, the player said Thursday in a radio interview.

MLSsoccer.com reported the deal is through the 2019 season with a club option for 2020.

Onuoha revealed his signing during an interview with BBC Radio Manchester.

"I just thought maybe this is the moment and the opportunity," Onuoha said of leaving England for an MLS team. "I didn't want to retire and think to myself, 'I wish I would have done this. I wish I would have done that.' When the opportunity came to go over there, I thought, yeah."

The 31-year-old Onuoha typically plays center-back. He spent the previous 6 1/2 seasons with English Championship club Queens Park Rangers before becoming a free agent after the 2017-18 campaign.

He has made 304 Premier League appearances during stints with Queens Park (210) and Manchester City (94 in six seasons).

Real Salt Lake (44 points) is tied for fourth place in the Western Conference entering Saturday's home game against Minnesota United.
