Sporting Kansas City signs free agent Rodney Wallace, trades for Erik Hurtado

Sporting Kansas City has signed free-agent defender Rodney Wallace to a one-year contract, the club announced on Friday.

The 30-year-old joins the Western Conference regular-season champions after a two-year stint with New York City FC, where he registered five goals and eight assists in 46 appearances.

"Sporting KC is a passionate club that knows how to win," Wallace said in a statement. "There are a lot of key aspects here to winning, from the players and staff to the facilities and fans. The soccer atmosphere in Kansas City gives the team that extra edge, and I am excited to come here and be a part of something special."

The club also traded for Erik Hurtado from the Vancouver Whitecaps, giving up a second-round pick in 2020 and a first-rounder in 2021.

"We are thankful to Erik for his contributions on and off the pitch over his six seasons in Vancouver, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter in Kansas City," Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos said in a statement. "This is a move that benefits both Erik and the club as we continue to make changes to our roster for the short, medium, and long term."

Hurtado had 12 goals and 10 assists in 105 MLS matches (47 starts) for Vancouver. The 28-year-old had two goals and one assists in 12 matches (four starts) in 2018.

Wallace has predominantly played at left midfield or left wing throughout his career, but reports on Friday suggest that he will be in competition with Seth Sinovic for Sporting's left-back spot.

Since being drafted sixth overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United, Wallace has accumulated 26 goals and 33 assists in 214 regular- and postseason appearances. He was named an MLS All-Star in 2013, and won MLS Cup in 2015 with the Portland Timbers, where he spent five seasons before his stint with NYCFC.

Wallace is a Costa Rica international, having represented Los Ticos on 29 occasions, including at last summer's World Cup.
