Women's Super League: Early own goal helps Reading past Tottenham

An unfortunate own goal from defender Amy Turner was enough to secure Reading a narrow 1-0 victory over Tottenham in the Women's Super League on Sunday.

Turner's own goal on 12 minutes came amid a flurry of chances for Reading, with Emma Harries playing a starring role.

Spurs were more involved in the second half but failed to get the better of Jackie Burns as Reading claimed a vital win.

Brighton, who entered Sunday having conceded 15 goals in their last three leagues games, had a task on their hands to keep fourth-place Manchester City quiet, and they did so only for 11 minutes.

First, Brighton forward Veatriki Sarri diverted Chloe Kelly's whipped corner into her own net before City midfielder Julie Blakstad met another of Kelly's deliveries with a flying header at the back post to double their advantage. City midfielder Laura Coombs made it three with a shot from the top of the box.

Brighton found a late conciliation thanks to a scruffy Lee Geum-Min stoppage time effort, but it was too little too late.

Elswhere, Liverpool, who are still chasing their second win of the season, got off to a fast start against West Ham when midfielder Ceri Holland dashed into the box and fired a loose ball into the far side of Mackenzie Arnold's goal in the third minute.

Much the better team with the ball, Liverpool added a second 20 minutes in when Katie Stengel claimed her ninth of the campaign with a sweet strike to the bottom right corner.

A late chance for substitute, Yana Daniels was the last meaningful action of the game that had seen the visitors grow into and begin to ask more questions in attack although they failed to claim a goal or point.
