CHICAGO -- Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran hit grand slams,
and David Wright added a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the
New York Mets scored a club-record 11 runs in the frame against the
Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.
The Mets sent 16 batters to the plate in the 41-minute half
inning and benefited from two errors on Chicago second baseman Todd Walker. Eight of the 11 runs were unearned. Chicago pitchers threw
70 pitches in the inning.
According to team historian Ed Hartig, it is the first time in
club history the Cubs had given up two grand slams in the same
inning. It is the fifth time they yielded two in the same game.
Floyd's grand slam came off Chicago starter Sean Marshall.
Beltran's slam and Wright's homer were surrendered by reliever
Roberto Novoa.
It was the sixth career grand slam for Floyd, who earlier in the
game had a solo homer. It was the fifth career grand slam for
Beltran.
The Mets' outburst marked the first time a team had two slams in
an inning since April 23, 1999, when St. Louis' Fernando Tatis hit
two in the same frame at Los Angeles. It has been accomplished by a
National League club four times and seven overall in the majors.
