Toronto Raptors guard Terence Davis was arrested in New York City on Tuesday night on charges of assaulting a woman and criminal mischief, police said.
The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. in an apartment building on the East Side of Manhattan, police said.
A 20-year-old woman told police she went to visit her boyfriend, Davis, and that the two got into a verbal dispute, a police spokeswoman said. Davis then hit the woman in the face, hurting her eye, and grabbed her phone and broke its screen, Detective Sophia Mason said in a statement.
According to a criminal complaint, the woman's son was standing next to her when Davis hit her, causing the son to fall.
Davis was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of assault, attempted assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief, aggravated harassment and harassment. Defense attorney Greg Esposito said his client denies the charges and he declined further comment. Davis was released on his own recognizance and his next court date was set for Dec. 11.
The Raptors said they were aware of reports about the incident and were in the process of gathering more information.
Davis, 23, averaged 7.5 points in 72 regular-season games for the Raptors as a rookie last season and then 7.2 points over six appearances during Toronto's postseason run inside the NBA's bubble at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Toronto signed Davis last summer in Las Vegas after a standout performance in his first summer league game for the Denver Nuggets after he was undrafted out of Ole Miss. He was an All-Rookie second-team selection last season after earning a consistent spot in coach Nick Nurse's rotation.
