Andrew Bogut opts out of Sydney Kings, but not retired yet

Andrew Bogut has announced he will not be re-signing with NBL club the Sydney Kings.

In a statement on Twitter on Monday morning, Bogut wrote: "I have decided not to sign with the Sydney Kings, or any professional sporting team for that matter for the time being.

"With everything going on in the world, the future does not look too clear, most notably in regards to sporting leagues worldwide.

"This is by no means a retirement note, but simply saying any concrete decisions are too hard to be made at this point in time."

Bogut returned to Australia in 2018, and was named Defensive Player of the Year and MVP in 2019 after a successful NBL season. The former No. 1 NBA draft pick also has a stake in the Kings with an option for further equity.

"The reason I have decided to do this now is to give the Sydney Kings enough notice to act accordingly with Free Agency around the corner," Bogut wrote.

"My body is enjoying the break after playing basketball for 19 straight months and I hope to be back on the basketball court in the near future!"

Bogut's announcement leaves the Kings in a major rebuilding phase following the decisions of Xavier Cooks and Casper Ware to opt out of their deals.
