Phillips is ranked No. 3 on Mel Kiper's list of top 10 defensive tackle prospects for the 2015 draft and is generally regarded as a Day 1 or Day 2 selection by most draft experts. He finished his redshirt sophomore season with 38 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, while adding two sacks, one fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
Although listed as a redshirt sophomore, Phillips leaves Norman after his fourth year in the program. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2011, saw spot duty as a redshirt freshman in '12 and started the '13 season as a disruptive anchor on OU's defense before a back injury ended his season after four games. Because of the injury, Phillips was granted an extra season last summer, thus making him a redshirt sophomore in his fourth season this fall.
The Sooners have good depth at the position even with Phillips' departure. Redshirt freshman Matthew Romar is among the players who could help fill the void next season.
