The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent quarterback Caleb Hanie on Tuesday.
Cleveland's quarterback situation is unsettled with both Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell dealing with concussions. After Hanie's tryout last week, the Browns (4-8) signed quarterback Alex Tanney off the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.
To create a roster spot for Hanie, the Browns placed linebacker Brandon Magee on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury.
It's unknown if either Weeden or Campbell will be medically cleared to start Cleveland's game Sunday versus the New England Patriots.
Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said Weeden was in the building Monday morning and was sent home. Weeden cannot play until he passes league-mandated concussion tests.
Campbell, who missed the Browns' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday with a concussion, has been cleared for activity but not to practice, Chudzinski said.
Hanie, 28, entered the NFL in 2008 as an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State and spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears. He started four games in 2011 and finished that season with 613 passing yards, three touchdowns, nine interceptions and a passer rating of 41.8.
Hanie served as one of the Peyton Manning's backups with the Denver Broncos in 2012, then joined the Baltimore Ravens last April but was released in August.
