Former South Africa scrum-half Joost van der Westhuizen has died aged 45, his charity the J9 Foundation has announced.

Van der Westhuizen was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital on Saturday morning after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

The 89-Test Springbok was widely considered as one of the best scrum-halves in rugby, and helped South Africa to World Cup glory on home soil in 1995.

The J9 Foundation was set up by van der Westhuizen to aid others suffering motor neurone disease.
