England rugby: Richard Wigglesworth promoted in coach shuffle

England have confirmed their coaching line up for the upcoming autumn internationals, with Richard Wigglesworth promoted to senior assistant coach.

Steve Borthwick's backroom team has experienced upheaval since the summer Tests against Japan and New Zealand with head of strength and conditioning Aled Walters and coach Felix Jones both handing in their resignations. Walters has joined Ireland, while Jones is working his 12-month notice period, and is working remotely in an analysis role.

The national team announced the changes on Monday as Borthwick readjusted the group ahead of their four Tests in November with Joe El-Abd brought in as defence coach. He will undertake his England duties while seeing out the rest of the season as director of rugby at Oyonnax.

Tom Harrison and Andrew Strawbridge remain in their roles, while Wigglesworth has been promoted and will work with Borthwick on developing England's game plan, attacking strategy while supporting him on day-to-day leadership and managing the coaching group.

"Richard's deep knowledge of the game and his excellent tactical understanding means he has become a key figure in our coaching team," Borthwick said. "He shares our emotional commitment to English rugby, and I am certain he will play a crucial role in driving the standards of this England team. I am delighted he has agreed to take on this new challenge.

"We have an outstanding group of coaches, who each bring unique expertise and experience to their roles. Together, we're committed to helping the team reach new heights as we prepare for the upcoming autumn series."

Wigglesworth added: "Coaching is my passion, and I'm eager to do whatever I can to help this talented group of players win games of rugby, consistently. "This is an exciting time for England rugby. Steve has created a coaching environment based on collaboration and hard work, and we are constantly evolving and growing and striving for success."
