AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has confirmed all Victorian clubs will be based in Queensland for up to 10 weeks as the league looks to complete a majority of the competition.
Victorian-based sides were forced to leave the state two weeks ago in order to continue the home and away season, but due to the increase of local COVID-19 transmissions in New South Wales, teams that had been based in Sydney will now be moved across the border to Queensland.
McLachlan faced the media on Wednesday and stated the league were not able to announce fixtures changes as the AFLPA were still looking at competition compression.
"This is a clear plan and makes Queensland the base for our competition," McLachlan said. "We are not able to announce the fixtures yet but we are working with the AFLPA on what fixture compression is possible."
The AFL will set up a transition hub for clubs to bring extra players back into the league and will help in facilitating players' families joining them in the Queensland hubs.
McLachlan would not make an announcement on the AFL Grand Final, stating no decision had been made yet on whether the event would be forced to be moved.
"There is no decision made on the Grand Final, this is about the home and away season. The Grand Final is at the MCG until there's reasons that it can't be. But we're not talking about that today."
