Focused David Johnson hopes for extension soon

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson said his agent and the team are continuing to talk about a contract extension, and he is hopeful a deal gets done soon.

Johnson was asked about his contract situation after Monday's training camp practice. He is back from a wrist injury that forced him out of almost the entire 2017 season and got two carries for 28 yards in Saturday's preseason opener.

The fourth-year running back is in the last year of his rookie contract. He skipped a June minicamp as he sought an extension, but reported to the team before training camp and has been a full participant since.

"I really want to focus on football, because I don't want that to hinder my play on the field," Johnson said.

Johnson, a 2016 Pro Bowler, didn't seem too upset that a deal hasn't been reached. He's encouraged a deal will get done and said he's anxious to prove his value on the field.

"It's a business. I can't dwell on it," Johnson said. "I understand. I didn't play last year. I was hoping my production from my second year and what I did in the first would help out, but the NFL is, 'What have you done for me lately?' So hopefully I can prove it once the season starts."
