How Terrance West's absence from practice could affect Ravens

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens running back Terrance West didn't practice Wednesday due to a calf injury.

West, the Ravens' starting running back, leads the team with two touchdowns and ranks second with 102 yards rushing. He was held to two carries in the second half in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, and coach John Harbaugh didn't indicate there was an injury issue after the game.

"He had a big workload, and towards the end of the game, we thought it would be better to not get too many reps in the fourth quarter," Harbaugh said when asked about West on Sunday.

West was part of the Ravens' running back by committee, getting a total of 29 touches in the first two games. Baltimore would likely continue to split reps if he was sidelined.

Javorius Allen is the top candidate to replace West as the starter and will see plenty of work in passing situations because he's the best current pass-catcher in the backfield. Alex Collins, who had an impressive Ravens debut Sunday, should be heavily involved as well and could assume West's role as the red-zone back because of his physical running style.

The other players not practicing for Baltimore were defensive tackle Brandon Williams (foot), tight end Maxx Williams (undisclosed), wide receiver Michael Campanaro (hamstring) and cornerback Jaylen Hill (hamstring). Outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith (knee, ankle) returned to practice after missing one game.
