ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills fired Rex Ryan on Tuesday, potentially ending his eight-year run as an NFL head coach.

With a 61-66 record since he took over the New York Jets in 2009, and not having made the playoffs since the 2010 season, Ryan is unlikely to land another head-coaching gig in a league where few coaches get third chances to win.

Ryan acknowledged that likelihood when speaking during his introductory Bills news conference in January, 2015.

"I had one more shot to be a head coach, and I have to get it done," he said. "And I understand I won’t have another opportunity and don’t want another opportunity. This is the shot that I want."

Asked prior to the Bills' Week 13 game against the Cleveland Browns about his future plans if he was fired, Ryan declined to comment.

"Maybe there's a better time for that, but not right now," he said.

Unless Ryan is interested in returning to the sidelines as a defensive coordinator or assistant head coach, his best chance for employment will be as a television analyst. Ryan interviewed with CBS and ESPN prior to being hired by the Bills in 2015.
