The Chicago Bears will cut their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday. Here’s a projection:
QUARTERBACKS (2): Mitchell Trubisky, Chase Daniel
Coach Matt Nagy kept two quarterbacks on the active roster last season. Look for veteran Tyler Bray to be signed to the practice squad.
RUNNING BACKS (4): Tarik Cohen, Mike Davis, David Montgomery, Kerrith Whyte Jr
The top three are set -- Cohen, Davis and Montgomery. That leaves filling the fourth slot. Whyte -- drafted in the seventh round -- has good speed and value in the return game.
WIDE RECEIVERS (6): Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson, Riley Ridley, Javon Wims
The offseason addition of Patterson -- a quality multipurpose threat -- almost forces the Bears to keep six receivers. Wims has looked really sharp in the preseason. Ridley missed time early with a hamstring injury, but he was drafted in the fourth round of out Georgia, meaning he likely stays.
TIGHT ENDS (4): Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen, Bradley Sowell, Ben Braunecker
The Bears aren’t thrilled with their tight ends. Chicago could opt to sign or claim a tight end after final cuts. Undrafted rookie Ian Bunting is also pushing to make the 53-man roster, but Sowell (a converted offensive lineman) has a slight edge because he played for the team last season.
OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Charles Leno Jr., Bobby Massie, Kyle Long, Cody Whitehair, James Daniels, Rashaad Coward, Ted Larsen, Alex Bars, Cornelius Lucas.
Since tackle T.J. Clemmings (quad) is out for the year and Coward is dealing with an injury, it’s entirely possible look outside the organization for backup offensive linemen help.
DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Bilal Nichols, Roy Robertson-Harris, Jonathan Bullard, Nick Williams
The Bears are still waiting for Bullard -- a former third-round pick -- to unlock his potential. Bullard making the team is hardly a no-brainer. Williams is another big body at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds.
LINEBACKERS (9): Khalil Mack, Danny Trevathan, Roquan Smith, Leonard Floyd, Aaron Lynch, Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Nick Kwiatkoski, Isaiah Irving, Kylie Fitts
Lynch has been bothered by a shoulder injury but should be ready for Week 1. At some point, the Bears need to decide whether to extend Trevathan, who turns 30 next offseason. James Vaughters, formerly of the Packers, Patriots and Chargers, has flashed in the preseason and is in contention for one of the last linebacker spots. So is Josh Woods.
DEFENSIVE BACKS (10): Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara, Eddie Jackson, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Buster Skrine, Sherrick McManis, Deon Bush, Duke Shelley, Kevin Toliver, DeAndre Houston-Carson
Rookie Stephen Denmark is another intriguing prospect at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, but he’s probably better off spending a year on the practice squad. Undrafted rookie Clifton Duck also has turned heads in the preseason.
SPECIALISTS (3): Eddy Pineiro, Pat O'Donnell, Patrick Scales
Kicker is still very fluid. The Bears could claim or sign a kicker if they have doubts about Pineiro.
