Jim Caldwell on Lions' loss to Saints: 'Sometimes festering's a good thing'

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions have lost two games in a row. Typically, teams try to at least pretend to forget about losses after 24 hours. It’s a well-known cliché at this point no matter the level of football.

With an off week coming up, though, Lions coach Jim Caldwell seems to be open to a different approach. He wants his team to sit in its 52-38 loss to New Orleans -- a score where the majority of the game was uglier than it appeared for the Lions.

“Sometimes festering’s a good thing,” Caldwell said. “So, we try to balance it and it kind of depends on where we are as a team and how we see it and we adjust it in that regard. But there’s nothing wrong with being really determined about making certain you correct your errors. So, it just kind of depends on the week.

“When you got one right away, you certainly try to get it behind you within a relatively short period of time, and this particular week, it’s not a bad thing that we need to be concerned about a whole lot of things in terms of how we’re playing.”

There’s a lot for the Lions to be concerned with right now.

The Lions’ offense still hasn’t topped 350 yards of offense since Week 1 against Arizona. Its defense, which had appeared to be one of the better units in the NFL, has allowed more than 350 yards in three of the last four games. All three of those games are losses.

Their quarterback is beat up, to the point he couldn’t take a single snap under center against the Saints. The team’s defensive emotional leader, Glover Quin, was concussed against New Orleans and won’t be able to play again until he clears the league’s protocol.

Detroit’s best receiver, Golden Tate, injured his shoulder and his return is unknown. The Lions' offensive line has allowed 23 sacks -- tied with Green Bay for most in the NFL and 19 more than the Saints, who have allowed an NFL-best four sacks. Taylor Decker remains out -- but could be back this season. Greg Robinson injured his ankle against New Orleans. T.J. Lang was inactive Sunday with a back injury. Rick Wagner is banged up. Travis Swanson dealt with injuries earlier this year.

The Lions, if they had to put out an injury report this week, would potentially have listed a quarter of their roster. So the timing of Detroit’s off week is good -- for a multitude of reasons.

“Yeah, no doubt. Yeah, there’s no question about it, we had quite a few guys get a little banged up during the course of the game,” Caldwell said. “So just like I mentioned yesterday, if we were playing a Thursday game, it’d be really tough.

“If we were playing a Sunday game, it might be even fairly tough, so this comes at a great time for us.”
