Despite uneven stats, QB Patrick Mahomes II has better day

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- One day after throwing three training camp interceptions, Kansas City Chiefs rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes II had a better practice session Tuesday. His stats were uneven -- 1-of-8 in full-team drills and 9-of-10 in 7-on-7 -- but even within that Mahomes showed signs of improvement.

Mahomes’ stats weren’t good in team drills in part because he declined to force the ball in coverage. On at least two of his incomplete passes, Mahomes found no receiver open downfield and unloaded the ball where nobody could get to it.

Wow moment: Mahomes once again displayed his touch on the deep ball, throwing a touchdown to wide receiver Tevin Jones in a 7-on-7 drill.

Whoa moment: Linebacker Ukeme Eligwe got his hands on a Mahomes pass and would have intercepted it if not for a nice play by wide receiver Marcus Kemp, who knocked the ball away.
