Running back C.J. Spiller hoping his fourth time with Chiefs is a charm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- If the NFL kept records on how many times one player signed with the same team in a year, running back C.J. Spiller might be near the top of the list.

Spiller was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs for the fourth time on Monday. He has yet to get into a game, though with Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West on the Chiefs' injury report this week, there's a chance he could play on Thursday night against the Raiders in Oakland.

"We'll see," said Spiller, who practiced with the Chiefs on Tuesday for the first time since Sept. 16, when he was released for the third time this year. "I just got here. It's a short week so you've got to get your mind back into it. Some stuff I looked over and it kind of came back to me, but there's still a long way to go. We'll see what happens.

"It's part of being a professional. If I'm called upon to go out there and play, I've got to be ready to go. ... To sit here and say I'm in football shape, that would be [wrong] because I haven't played [any] games. I haven't played since that last preseason game. But I'm in some type of shape, so I can go out there and get the job done."

Coach Andy Reid wouldn't commit to Spiller playing in Oakland, saying only, "He does know the plays. If he has to play, you'd be confident that he could do it."

The Chiefs may have no choice but to have Spiller available. Hunt was a full practice participant on Tuesday but was still on the injury report with a sore knee. West has a concussion and is in the NFL's protocol, making it unlikely he will be available.

The Chiefs have a fourth running back, Akeem Hunt, who played as the third-down back late in Sunday's loss to the Steelers after West's injury.

Once West returns, whether that's for the Oct. 30 game against the Denver Broncos or sometime beyond, Spiller's chances for being released a fourth time by the Chiefs look good.

For the time being, though, he said he's happy to be back.

"You just handle it like a professional," Spiller said of being released by the Chiefs three times in September. "To sit here and say I wasn't frustrated, I'd be lying to you. But as you get older in this business, that's part of it. You have to adjust. I went home [to South Carolina] and I worked out. I hung out with family and I enjoyed life. I wasn't stressing at all. I was just hanging out with family and doing stuff with my daughter that I don't typically get to do [during the season].

"To see her during this time of year is always a bonus for me because I rarely get to see her."
