Chargers hold firm at No. 25 in ESPN NFL power rankings

The Los Angeles Chargers remained at No. 25 in our post-draft ESPN NFL power rankings, voted on by a group of ESPN's NFL experts.

The rest of the AFC West is in the top 10, including the Oakland Raiders at No. 7, the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 8 and the Denver Broncos at No. 10.

However, in this ESPN Insider piece, draft analyst Todd McShay writes that the Chargers are one of his five most improved teams after this year’s draft.

McShay says the Chargers did an excellent job of finding good value in the draft while also filling their biggest needs.

McShay likes the addition of Mike Williams to a pass-catching group that includes Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry and believes Iowa defensive back Desmond King was a steal in the fifth round.

My take: The Chargers should be better than expected this season with a new head coach in Anthony Lynn. In particular, they will be better on defense, with Joey Bosa in his second season and the addition of new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

Ricky Henne of Chargers.com writes that defensive lineman Tenny Palepoi is eager to play with former Utah teammate, Chargers sixth-round selection Sam Tevi.

My take: Tevi actually served as Palepoi’s backup with the Utes on the defensive line during his freshman season before switching over to offense, so having a good friend on the roster should ease the transition for the rookie offensive lineman.

Tom Krasovic of The San Diego Union-Tribune writes that a humbled Ryan Leaf seems like he gets it now. Leaf is making the rounds on a media tour to discuss his past addictions.

My take: An interesting trip down memory lane of Leaf’s rookie season, including the now 40-year-old’s take on his infamous locker room outburst while being interviewed by a reporter.

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com re-ranks the 2015 draft class and places Chargers running back Melvin Gordon at No. 2, ahead of Todd Gurley at No. 3. Arizona Cardinals versatile running back David Johnson is No. 1 at the position.

My take: I agree with the Rosenthal’s order, although I still believe Gurley can be special if the Rams improve the offensive line up front. Gordon redeemed himself and showed his true talent in 2016 after struggling through his rookie season behind an inconsistent offensive line. Overall, the 2015 draft class had an impressive group of running backs.
