Desperate Jets have to sign someone at QB; it might as well be Matt Flynn

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A few thoughts on the New York Jets' expected signing of free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

1. Who did you expect, Mike Glennon or Kirk Cousins? The Jets weren't going to get a quality No. 2 quarterback because they weren't looking for a quality No. 2 quarterback. This is a temp job because, as general manager Mike Maccagnan noted earlier Tuesday, the expectation is that Geno Smith (broken jaw) will miss four regular-season games. It made little sense to swing a semi-significant trade for a stopgap player. Yeah, they could've waited for the first round of cuts (Sept. 1), but no team is cutting its No. 2 quarterback. The Jets would've been sifting through the rubble of No. 3 and No. 4 quarterbacks. At least now they can get Flynn on campus and begin teaching him their system. Presumably, the cranky hamstring is healed.

2. The Jets had to get someone. Rookie Bryce Petty might be good someday, but that day isn't now. He's not ready to be the No. 2 quarterback.

3. The well-traveled Flynn, 30, who has made more than $18 million in his career despite only seven starts and 17 touchdown passes, will have to adjust to Chan Gailey's offense. He spent most of his career in West Coast systems, and Gailey's offense most certainly isn't a West Coast system. This is reminiscent of 1999, when Bill Parcells -- desperate for a backup -- traded for Rick Mirer in the middle of the preseason. Little did he know he'd have to play Mirer almost immediately, as Vinny Testaverde ruptured an Achilles tendon in the opener. Mirer was a disaster, eventually losing the job to Ray Lucas, who should've had first dibs.

4. Let's face it: If something happens to Ryan Fitzpatrick before Smith is healthy, the Jets are doomed. No mid-August quarterback acquisition would change that.
