2015 Philadelphia Eagles game-by-game predictions

In April, I picked the Philadelphia Eagles to go 10-6 in 2015. The logic: Chip Kelly went 10-6 in each of his first two NFL seasons, so why not the third? Really, there was so much change and so much uncertainty surrounding that change that it was pretty tough to know how good the Eagles could be. By late August, we’ve seen the Eagles thump the Colts and Ravens while the Redskins and Cowboys have lost key defenders to injuries. That’s why we’ve bumped the record up to 11-5.

Week 1: Monday, Sept. 14, at Atlanta, 7:10 p.m.

My hunch is that new Falcons coach Dan Quinn will build a strong defense to go with the Matt Ryan-led offense. But I don’t think it will all come together for Atlanta’s first game of the season. Score: Eagles 30, Falcons 23. Record: 1-0.

Week 2: Sunday, Sept. 20, Dallas, 4:25 p.m.

Here’s a loss turned into a win. The Cowboys have not been especially impressive in the preseason. They’ll be in the NFC East race, but the Eagles have all the momentum going into their home opener. Score: Eagles 37, Cowboys 28. Record: 2-0.

Week 3: Sunday, Sept. 27, at New York Jets, 1 p.m.

This always looked like a win for the Eagles. Having Geno Smith punched in the face didn’t exactly add to the Jets’ credibility as a contender. Score: Eagles 31, Jets 13. Record: 3-0.

Week 4: Sunday, Oct. 4, at Washington, 1 p.m.

Washington looked like a messy team in April. Things have gotten only worse since then. Although the Eagles lost an ugly one at FedEx Field in December, this is a much different team. Score: Eagles 33, Washington 17. Record: 4-0.

Week 5: Sunday, Oct. 11, New Orleans, 1 p.m.

Honestly, it won’t be shocking if the Eagles beat the Jimmy Graham-less Saints. But after a 4-0 start, there is bound to be a misstep. And injuries usually have something to say by this point in the season. Score: Saints 28, Eagles 24. Record: 4-1.

Week 6: Monday, Oct. 19, New York Giants, 8:30 p.m.

The underlying assumption in all this is that the Eagles really have put together a strong team. The secondary will be tested by Odell Beckham Jr. It passes. Score: Eagles 27, Giants 20. Record: 5-1.

Week 7: Sunday, Oct. 25, at Carolina Panthers, 8:30 p.m.

The Panthers were one of the few good teams the Eagles beat last year, and it wasn’t close. This is tougher: on the road, in prime time. But it’s hard to imagine the Panthers turning things around that much in one year. Score: Eagles 27, Panthers 17. Record: 6-1.

Week 8: Bye week.

Week 9: Sunday, Nov. 8, at Dallas, 8:30 p.m.

DeMarco Murray makes his return to AT&T Stadium. Chip Kelly hasn’t lost at Jerry World yet. He isn’t about to start now. Score: Eagles 37, Cowboys 28. Record: 7-1.

Week 10: Sunday, Nov. 15, Miami, 1 p.m.

There’s a letdown risk here, playing at 1 p.m. after three prime-time games in a row. But the Eagles should be able to take care of business. Score: Eagles 31, Dolphins 27. Record: 8-1.

Week 11: Sunday, Nov. 22, Tampa Bay, 1 p.m.

This should be the most sure thing on the Eagles’ schedule. Jameis Winston will be settling into the job by now, but he’s still a rookie starting against the grown-ups. Score: Eagles 35, Buccaneers 17. Record: 9-1.

Week 12: Thursday, Nov. 26, at Detroit, 12:30 p.m.

One of the more memorable wins in Chip Kelly’s tenure was a snowy victory over the Lions in 2013. On a short week, with no chance of snow, things should be a little different. Score: Lions 28, Eagles 23. Record: 9-2.

Week 13: Sunday, Dec. 6, at New England, 4:25 p.m.

Last year, the Eagles struggled against winning teams. This year is a little different. They hit the ceiling only against the truly elite teams. The Patriots are one of those. Score: Patriots 34, Eagles 23. Record: 9-3.

Week 14: Sunday, Dec. 13, Buffalo, 1 p.m.

LeSean McCoy makes his return to Lincoln Financial Field. Thanks to his comments about Chip Kelly, the guess here is he won’t be greeted warmly. Score: Eagles 27, Bills 10. Record: 10-3.

Week 15: Sunday, Dec. 20, Arizona, 1 p.m.

The gut feeling here was Arizona would surpass San Francisco in the NFC West. Not so sure about that now, but a healthy Carson Palmer is still the difference-maker in this one. Score: Cardinals 31, Eagles 27. Record: 10-4.

Week 16: Saturday, Dec. 26, Washington, 8:25 p.m.

The Eagles are in contention. Washington should be playing out the end of a miserable season, and maybe the end of the Jay Gruden era. Cover your eyes. Score: Eagles 41, Washington 20. Record: 11-4.

Week 17: Sunday, Jan. 3, at New York Giants, 1 p.m.

Thought this might be for the NFC East title. Now I’m not so sure the Giants' defense is good enough to make them contenders. Their offense should be pretty potent, though. Score: Giants 31, Eagles 27. Record: 11-5.
