The Eagles currently have a league-low six picks and are without a second- or third-rounder. Executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman is looking to add draft assets and said the Eagles are "open for business" when asked about potentially moving out of the first round.
Team needs
It's good to be the champs. There are no glaring holes on the roster, which puts the Eagles in a desirable spot where they don't have to reach for need. That said, they could use a running back to add to a group led by Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement, especially with Ajayi entering the final year of his rookie contract and given the questions about his long-term viability because of knee concerns. Tight end could use some attention with the departure of Brent Celek and Trey Burton this offseason. They are interested in linebackers and safeties and are also seeking a slot corner to replace Patrick Robinson, who left for the New Orleans Saints in free agency.
Trade winds
If the Eagles move back into the top of the second round, both the trade value chart and recent history suggest that a fourth-rounder would be fair compensation. Maybe they'll fetch a third. They can also acquire picks by moving players. Linebacker Mychal Kendricks is a prime candidate. He has been the subject of trade speculation for years now. The new deal for Nigel Bradham, along with the signing of Corey Nelson in free agency, increases the chances that Kendricks gets moved this time around. A conditional Day 3 pick makes sense. Cornerback Ronald Darby has had some trade buzz around him as well, though the recent release of CB Daryl Worley makes dealing Darby riskier. Those are two of the more obvious ones. Roseman is good for a stunner every now and again, so stay on your toes.
Prospects to watch
Late first or early second round looks like a good place for running backs to go off the board. The Eagles have done their homework on LSU's Derrius Guice, Georgia's Sony Michel and Rashaad Penny of San Diego State, among others. ... Stanford safety Justin Reid is the type of versatile DB that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz gravitates toward. ... Tight end Dallas Goedert of South Dakota State has drawn comparisons to Zach Ertz and shares both agents and an FCS Dakota connection with Carson Wentz. ... Tackle Connor Williams of Texas and Georgia guard Isaiah Wynn would be intriguing if they slipped. ... The same might be said for linebackers Leighton Vander Esch of Boise State and Rashaan Evans of Alabama. ... Receivers Christian Kirk of Texas A&M and SMU's Courtland Sutton could be enticing options, especially if the Eagles trade back and they're still available.
Team philosophy
The Eagles want to build from the inside out. Whether that aligns with the talent available in the late first/early second round is to be determined, but offensive and defensive linemen are never far from the front office's mind.
My pick at 32
If the Eagles stand pat, Guice is as good a bet as any if he's available. He has fans in both the coaching and personnel departments and would make one of the top offenses in the game all the more lethal with his speed and power combo.
