History indicates a 49ers tight end will produce in 2016

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In recent years, a tight end in a Chip Kelly offense has offered quite a bit of production. Whether it was Brent Celek or Zach Ertz in Philadelphia, someone from the position was consistently offering value for fantasy players. The San Francisco 49ers don't seem to have a tight end as talented as either in that duo, but that doesn't mean one or two won't emerge as a contributor. The question is which one?

Vance McDonald

ESPN Fantasy Projection: 34 receptions, 412 yards, 3 TDs

Over or under: McDonald's talent and athleticism has never been in question, but his ability to consistently catch the ball has -- which is why we're going to go with the under for all three here. It's not that McDonald will lack for opportunities to win the starting job, but he's had a mostly nondescript camp so far and the guess here is that someone else will emerge as a more consistent target for whoever is at quarterback.

Garrett Celek

ESPN Fantasy Projection: 25 receptions, 265 yards, 2 TDs

Over or under: We'll take the over across the board on this one. Celek didn't really show much as a pass-catcher until the end of the 2015 season when he finished with 19 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns. It's probably not wise to expect Celek to greatly exceed those projected numbers, but he fits the mold of a tight end who can do a little bit of everything, which should get him enough snaps to meet the modest projections. It doesn't hurt that his brother Brent played for Kelly and can give him some guidance on what to do to excel in Kelly's offense.

Who else could see time: Blake Bell might be the most interesting of the 49ers' tight ends, and he could offer the most upside if he can garner consistent snaps. He's probably been the most productive of the group during training camp. Bruce Miller also can't be counted out, as he continues to settle in to yet another position. He's another willing blocker who will do whatever he can to help the team, a trait that Kelly values.
