Seahawks' Luke Joeckel set to return after missing five games

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks could use some good news on the injury front after taking several hits in that department in recent weeks. They got some Friday with word that left guard Luke Joeckel is set to return after missing the past five games following arthroscopic knee surgery.

Coach Pete Carroll saw what he needed to see this week from Joeckel to declare him good to go for Sunday's game against the 49ers at Levi's Stadium. Joeckel was listed as a full participant in all three practices.

"I'm really excited about that, for him, too," Carroll said. "It seems like it's been a long haul for him waiting to get back out, but he was able to take all of the work that he needed to do and he feels great."

Joeckel is among eight Seahawks listed as questionable for Sunday's game, though Carroll expressed confidence all will be available. Running back Mike Davis (groin) is listed as doubtful, while Seattle ruled out strong safety Kam Chancellor (neck), cornerback Shaquill Griffin (concussion) and right guard Oday Aboushi (shoulder), as expected.

As Carroll noted excitedly, Sunday's game will give the Seahawks their first look at Joeckel and left tackle Duane Brown playing side by side. Seattle acquired Brown in a trade with Houston in late October, after Joeckel had surgery.

Rookie Ethan Pocic filled in at left guard while Joeckel was out. Carroll declined to say if Pocic or Mark Glowinski would start at right guard in Aboushi's absence, though offensive-line coach Tom Cable said recently Pocic would compete for that job whenever Joeckel returned.

If it is Pocic, Seattle's starting offensive line Sunday will consist of three former first-round picks (Brown, Joeckel and right tackle Germain Ifedi) and two second-rounders (Pocic and center Justin Britt).

Cable previously said Joeckel might have been Seattle's most consistent offensive linemen over the first five games.

"Certainly he adds experience," Carroll said of Joeckel, the No. 2 overall pick in 2013. "He's been there and the wherewithal, that background, to put those two next to each other, next to Justin, I just think it's something we've been kind of thinking about for a while and hoping to see. We're excited. We're looking forward to that."

Seattle signed Joeckel, 26, over the offseason to a one-year deal that included $7 million guaranteed. The length of the deal was reflective of how Joeckel was coming off a serious knee injury he suffered the previous October, which cut short his final season with Jacksonville and required surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL and lateral meniscus.

Joeckel's recent surgery -- which was performed over Seattle's bye in Week 6 -- was to address lingering issues associated with that injury, which he said "got worse each week" he continued to play. He said he initially thought he'd be able to return sooner but that doctors "had to clean up a little bit more than they expected."

"Now it's just good to be back," Joeckel said. "Those first five weeks kinda flew by. These last five [while I was] out, those were a long five weeks. So it's just good to be back out on the field playing with the guys."

Joeckel is familiar with Brown from their days together in the AFC South. He said his new linemate will make his job easier.

"We've got to get out there and jell together right, but we both have experience and I think it's going to be an easy transition," Joeckel said.
