NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans addressed the interior last year with a lot of resources:

A first-round pick on right tackle Jack Conklin, a free-agent deal for center Ben Jones, one of three second-round picks on defensive lineman Austin Johnson, a sixth-round pick on guard Sebastian Tretola, a new contract for nose tackle Al Woods (recently cut), a trade for offensive tackle Dennis Kelly and a waiver claim of guard Josh Kline.

One of their first three non-special teamers added in 2017 free agency was Sylvester Williams, a nose tackle who was a first-round pick by Denver in 2013.

Even with cornerback Logan Ryan in the fold, prevailing wisdom is that the Titans now need to spend more value on the perimeter in the form of cornerbacks and wide receiver.

But the Titans may not be done working on their lines and adding big people.

Bill Parcells subscribed to the planet theory: There are only so many men on the planet big enough and skilled enough to control a game, particularly as defensive tackles. Those are far rarer than perimeter guys.

Draft analyst Mike Detillier took a different tact on The Midday 180 recently when we asked him about a conceivable scenario where the Titans were at No. 5 with both Alabama defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and LSU safety Jamal Adams available.

“The Greeks settled this years ago,” Detillier said. “If you have a chance at a really talented big guy or a really talented little guy, go with the big dude."

At the combine, Allen measured in at 6-foot-3 and 286 pounds.

Allen was impressive in an interview on The Midday 180 Tuesday, when he said he liked Nick Eason, the Titans defensive line coach, from their interaction at the combine and his pro day.

"Cool dude, cool dude,” Allen said. “Very relatable. I like the freedom he gives his players if they show that they can handle it, which is something we had at Alabama. He came down for my pro day, I had a private workout with him. It went really good."

Allen is the choice of Todd McShay for the Titans at No. 5 in his new mock draft. He has them addressing receiver later in the first round, selecting Mike Williams at No. 18. Scouts Inc. rates Allen behind only Texans A&M edge-rusher Myles Garrett.

Many tend to get obsessed with need as they look at the draft, and the Titans definitely need help at corner and can expand the offense with a big-time receiver.

But above all what they need are elite players.

If the Titans have a chance at Allen, they shouldn't pass on him because they have DaQuan Jones, Austin Johnson and Angelo Blackson. He projects to be better than any of those guys as a 3-4 end who'd play beside Jurrell Casey at tackle in the nickel.
