The Washington Redskins drafted Austin Reiter with the hopes of grooming him to be a backup center. But coaches said Josh LeRibeus developed enough at the position that they did not need to carry another backup. So they told Reiter they would be releasing him, according to a source.

As of Friday night, there had been no discussion with Reiter about placing him on the practice squad. But those moves are fluid and can change. Reiter is the second draft pick to be released: Sixth-round cornerback Tevin Mitchel was claimed off waivers by Indianapolis after Washington designated him as waived/injured.

The Redskins also informed running back Mack Brown, receivers Reggie Bell and Colin Lockett, linebacker Sage Harold, tight end D.J. Williams and safety Akeem Davis that they were released as well. They reached injury settlements with Williams and Davis.

The Redskins must trim their roster to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday.
