Anthony Joshua storms to Commonwealth title with 97-second knockout

Anthony Joshua needed just 97 seconds to beat Gary Cornish and win his first major title at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday.

Cornish was supposed to be Joshua's toughest test since turning professional in 2013 and entered the ring unbeaten. But he crumbled like a pasty after twice being floored by Joshua who made it 14 straight knockout wins to lift the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title.

The 2012 Olympic gold medallist registered his fifth first-round win after Cornish was first floored from a short right. Cornish, who had a slight height advantage a 6ft 7in, got up but he was bothered by every punch Joshua landed.

Joshua, 25, then dropped him again from a left to the chin in the Scot's corner and when he got up the fight was waved off.

Joshua is now being lined up to fight for the British title back at the O2 Arena on December 12 against Dillian Whyte, who earlier this week called him "a scumbag" and a "drug dealer from Watford".

With the tension building between the two and the pair both in knockout form, their showdown promises to be explosive.

On the undercard, Whyte (16-0, 13 KOs) looked impressive but did not have it all his own way against American Brian Minto (41-10, 26 KOs) in a third round stoppage win.

The Brixton-based boxer, 27, was caught by a few before he ended the first round with a right cross that Minto only got up from at the count of nine.

Minto, 40, was hurt by a left hook in the second but kept on swinging until belatedly sinking to his knees after a left to the temple in the third round.

Whyte beat Joshua as an amateur and Minto was his seventh victim since November, when he returned after a two-year drugs ban.

Epsom unbeaten flyweight Charlie Edwards captured the English flyweight title in only his fifth fight with a commanding points win.

Edwards' (5-0, 2 KOs) speed and unerring jab earned him a unanimous decision over Derby's Louis Norman (10-1-1, 2 KOs) with scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-92.
