'It's not party time yet' - Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso says McLaren is still a long way from where it needs to be despite scoring his first point of the season at the British Grand Prix.

Alonso finished tenth at Silverstone after a chaotic race in which he collided with his team-mate on the opening lap and switched to intermediate tyres several laps before the track was fully wet. Despite the scrappy race, he scored his first point since his return to McLaren at the start of the year.

"It is the first point of many, I hope," he said. "But it's not party time yet because it's only one point, it's not the best result and it's not what we want. It's true that it was important for the team and team morale to score points, because we know we are improving and getting better and better, but obviously there is no magic solution form one race to another.

"But when you get some points on the table like Jenson did in Monaco and today for me, this is the proof we are going in the right direction, but we need much more."

Alonso said his early switch to intermediate tyres was worth the risk in case the conditions had worsened.

"When you are outside the points you are able to risk more. If a thunderstorm came and some people were out on slick tyres and couldn't finish the race, maybe the result could be even better. It didn't rain for four or five laps and we were out there on intermediate tyres on a dry track, but in the end it worked for a single point."
