Nico Rosberg tyre blowout caused by external cut not structural issue

Pirelli says there are no signs of structural integrity issues with its tyres following the blowout on Nico Rosberg's car during second practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Rosberg's car suffered a blowout on the run down to Pouhon, pitching the Mercedes into a spin at 190mph. Pirelli launched an investigation into the incident overnight and came to the following conclusions.

- There are no signs of structural integrity issue of the tyre, neither on other tyres used by Mercedes nor on tyres used on other vehicles.
- Video footage shows a tyre problem on Rosberg's car which is consistent with an external cut into the tyre structure.
- Quality data check on other tyres has shown no anomalies.

Pirelli is not sure what exactly caused the cut to the tyre, but several accidents in the day may have left debris on the track. After extensive checks overnight Pirelli could also rule out a quality issue with the batch of tyres.

Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery added: "We have conducted a thorough investigation to find out exactly what happened with Nico's tyre. This investigation now excludes any structural integrity issues. Based on the information and data available an external source of damage is the conclusion made".
