Bernie Ecclestone has admitted an attempt to bring Formula One to Las Vegas is now "struggling".
Ecclestone mentioned the possibility of a race in Las Vegas last month, but concrete details of the proposal did not emerge. Now he admits the plans are stalling as he pushes for a track layout incorporating the city's world-famous Strip.
"We are struggling a little bit now," said Ecclestone. "I want to make sure we are on The Strip, so when people turn their TV on, they immediately know it is Vegas."
Las Vegas held two races in the parking lot of Caesar's Palace casino in 1981 and 1982, but despite several rumours of a return since then F1 has never gone back to the city. Ecclestone said it was being considered as an additional race alongside Austin rather than a replacement, but admitted any hope of a race in New Jersey or New York had now faded.
"We missed out a little bit with New York, but lots of places are talking about it."
