Michael Pittman Jr. suffered a concussion in Week 15 and entered the league's concussion protocol. Throughout the week, Pittman progressed through the protocol, ultimately receiving clearance from an Independent Neurological Consultant (as is required prior to return to play). He traveled with his teammates to Atlanta and was expected to start in the game on Sunday. However, on Saturday Pittman reported a return of his concussion symptoms and was then downgraded to OUT for Sunday's game. As a result, he re-enters the concussion protocol and will need to progress through the various phases before he can be eligible to return.
There is no way to put a timeline on it as these incidents are highly variable and are unique to the individual. Although it is relatively rare for a player to gain clearance and then suffer a setback in the form of symptom recurrence, this case serves as a reminder that it can happen. Progression in return from concussion injury is non-linear; sometimes an athlete will hit a temporary plateau on his path to return, but sometimes he will regress in terms of the return of symptoms that had previously cleared. The important note here is that Pittman reported his return of symptoms -- a key when it comes to proper management of his injury.
Jonathan Taylor is expected to make his return from surgery to repair the UCL in his right thumb. He originally injured his thumb in Week 12, something no one observing the game knew about as he managed to finish the entire game without limits. After undergoing surgery a few days later, Taylor was not placed on IR by the team. His progression back to form has been strong and his grip strength has returned to the point where both he and the team are confident in his return to action. With Zack Moss out again due to an injury to his forearm (the same one he fractured previously), Taylor is expected to get the primary workload.
