AC Milan's Philippe Mexes apologises for choking opponent

AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes apologised after being sent off and choking Lazio's Stefano Mauri during Saturday's game.

Mexes and Mauri challenged each other throughout the match and tensions boiled over in stoppage time, when Mexes retaliated after a foul from his opponent and was shown a straight red card.

But the Frenchman didn't stop with the dismissal and put Mauri in a chokehold while teammates tried to break up the scrum.

Afterward, Mexes said he was sorry for his actions on Sky Sport Italia.

"I am here to take responsibility, which is only right when you make a mistake," Mexes said. "First of all I apologise to the club, to my teammates and the fans because this is behaviour that has happened more than once in my career."

The centre-back has received 16 red cards in his 16-year career.

"I cannot accept the reaction I had," he continued. "I didn't do much on the field, but after the red I reacted in completely the wrong way.

"I have four kids, so I know this is not the right example to set as a father or as a player. I am aware of that sense of responsibility and I apologise.

"I have no excuses, as it's a football match and you cannot behave like that. I take responsibility and promise it won't happen again. It was my fault, that's all."

Mexes had the support of his manager, Pippo Inzaghi.

"Philippe apologised," Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia. "He was provoked and it's a shame as he will be suspended, but he was the first to apologise and recognise it was a terrible gesture."

Inzaghi also said he believes his player are still behind him, despite Milan sitting in 10th place.

"If a coach thought he was the problem, then he'd resign," Inzaghi said. "The team follows me, it's not enough right now, but there's a long season ahead of us and we can get into the Coppa Italia semifinal.

"I haven't heard from the president, but there's little to be said. We all know that we must continue working and return to the team we were only a month ago. I knew this wouldn't be an easy situation, as there were two coaches last season.

"Perhaps we gave a sense of false hope with three really good months, but can see this as a starting point to rebuild our campaign."
