Leicester face summer fight to keep Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kante and others

Leicester City might head into next season as the Premier League champions and have the alluring prospect of Champions League football to look forward to, but that won't guarantee their star names stay at the King Power Stadium.

PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez, probable fan Player of the Season N'Golo Kante and top-scorer Jamie Vardy have all been linked with lucrative moves elsewhere. Former AC Milan target Kasper Schmeichel and highly rated left-back Ben Chilwell could also prove to be summer targets for some major European clubs.

Leicester's ambitious Thai owners have been quick to stress that they don't need to sell, but that doesn't mean they won't want to if substantial offers are tabled.

Jamie Vardy, the club's 22-goal hero, is the least likely to exit. The England striker just signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract in February. He will be hard-pressed to find a club that idolize him and, more crucially, play to his strengths as much as Leicester do.

Vardy relishes roaming through the centre and lurking on the shoulder of the last defender. His game is all about pace, and that's why he does so much damage when deployed under direct, counter-attacking tactics.

For England, Vardy is often used more widely and is undoubtedly less effective. Given that he turns 30 next season and will slowly start to lose his lightening pace, A-list clubs across Europe and beyond might see signing him as a long-term risk.

Vardy wouldn't necessarily be value for the astronomical fee he would currently command. Plus, he'll want to play every week and in his favoured position. There aren't too many clubs in the Champions League that could promise him that. If they aren't in that tournament, he'd be crazy to even consider leaving the King Power Stadium.

On the other hand, Mahrez and Kante could walk into far more of Europe's elite teams, due to both their age and style. The Algerian is only 25 and has enjoyed a breakthrough season. He showed flashes of brilliance in 2014-2015 but nothing like the form or finishing of this campaign. His 17 goals and 11 assists have alerted the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to his talents.

Mahrez joined from Le Havre for just £350,000 and would probably be sold for an offer in excess of £40 million. There's no denying that's great business for Leicester. At some point, the club might need to make a call on his future with their financial hats on, instead of with their hearts.

Mahrez has always dreamed of playing for PSG. However, it would be tough to pull the strings or call the shots with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Lucas Moura, all big names (and egos) in their own right, on the team already. Mahrez is confident enough to one day take on the challenge of ousting one of them from the side, but the good news for Leicester is he appears in no rush to return to France.

Kante, meanwhile, has been the club's most consistent performer. He might not steal headlines, but he certainly steals balls. He is the interception king, a midfield pick pocket whom Claudio Ranieri joked just keeps on running. Football's very own Forrest Gump is going to be massively in demand. PSG have allegedly held talks with his agent, while Arsenal are reportedly keen on his signature too.

The problem Leicester have with Kante is that there is a £20 million release clause in his contract. A sale at that price is a bargain for the buyer, even though it would have seemed high enough when he joined from Caen last summer for £5.6 million. Kante is precisely what so many of the top clubs are desperate for: a non-flamboyant, box-to-box workhorse. He is thus the most likely of the above trio to depart.

If Leicester are sensible, they will ask all three players to at least stay until January to wait and see where the club is in both the Premier League and Champions League. What City don't want is to lose some of their star performers before a ball is kicked. That would make Everton on Saturday the last time they play together at home and force the Premier League champions to rebuild their foundations.

If the trio can be persuaded to stay for at worst half a season, the club can use this period to bring in other quality names to please and pacify them or, failing that, have more time to replace them should they persist on moving on.

Of course, it's not just Vardy, Mahrez and Kante leaving. Barcelona and Manchester United are both closely scouting Schmeichel, who has kept 11 clean sheets in 2016 thus far. The Dane could be tempted to Old Trafford due to his father's connections, but his problem, unlike the outfield players, is a "step up" might result in his being a benchwarmer. Schmeichel had that at Manchester City as deputy to Joe Hart, so he would surely only agree to a transfer if he were guaranteed to be the No. 1 shot-stopper. This won't be the case at a bigger club than Leicester (yet).

Ironically, the most likely name to exit this summer hasn't even featured in this season's fairy tale. Academy product Ben Chilwell has a huge future, with Liverpool desperate to land the 19-year-old left-back and prepared to pay in excess of £5 million.

Chilwell won the academy Player of the Year award last season and looked extremely solid against Hull and Spurs in the League and FA Cup, respectively. The fear will be Mahrez and Kante join more fashionable outfits, but if Leicester are to plan wisely for the future and remain a Premier League force, it's actually players such as Chilwell they need to hang onto.
