Two years have passed since Atletico Madrid were so close to winning the 2014 Champions League final, only for Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos to equalise in the 93rd minute, allowing his team to ease to a 4-1 victory in extra-time.
In the 10 "derbis" since then, Atletico have generally had the upper hand, winning both the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey meetings last season. Diego Simeone's men are also unbeaten through the four most recent La Liga clashes, against three different Real coaches.
But Madrid's only victory in those 10 games was maybe the most important, as they progressed 1-0 on aggregate in last season's Champions League.
Here's a look back at the 10 matches:
Aug. 19, 2014 -- Spanish Super Cup first leg, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid
Atletico had lost key players form their 2013-14 league winning campaign in Thibaut Courtois, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis, while Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid were still digesting their summer business -- €80 million James Rodriguez started on the bench alongside almost out the door winger Angel Di Maria.
The excitement came late in a harder-fought than usual curtain-raiser. James netted his first Madrid goal on 81 minutes after having replaced the injured Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time. Raul Garcia equalised for Atletico at a corner with just three minutes left.
Aug. 22, 2014 -- Spanish Super Cup second leg, Estadio Vicente Calderon: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid
New Atletico centre-forward Mario Mandzukic banged in his first goal for the home side early on. Simeone was then sent off for tapping/slapping fourth official Antonio Santos Pargana on the back of the head, bringing an eight-match ban.
With Ronaldo not 100 percent fit, Madrid were unable to find an equaliser, and the Calderon crowd could celebrate a trophy win on home turf.
Sept. 13, 2014 -- La Liga, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Real Madrid 1-2 Atletico Madrid
Simeone was in the stands due to suspension, but his influence was all over another Atletico win at the Bernabeu. Tiago headed the visitors ahead from a corner, with Cristiano Ronaldo winning and converting a penalty to make it 1-1.
Madrid looked most likely to go on to win, but substitutes Arda Turan and Antoine Griezmann changed the game. Turan slotted home the winning goal after a lovely team move, and Griezmann might even have made it 3-1 late on.
Jan. 7, 2015 -- Copa del Rey last 16 first leg, Estadio Vicente Calderon: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Real Madrid
Madrid appeared to have decided they needed to take a more aggressive approach in these games -- and both Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Arbeloa were lucky to escape straight red cards. An Atletico XI featuring a heavy sprinkling of reserves kept their heads and eased to a first leg win via a penalty from Raul Garcia and header from Jose Maria Gimenez.
Jan. 15, 2015 -- Copa del Rey last 16 second leg, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico Madrid
Before the game Ronaldo showed off his recently won 2014 Ballon d'Or to the crowd, but the Bernabeu mood changed when Fernando Torres grabbed an early away goal for Atletico.
Just weeks after rejoining his boyhood club, Torres netted again in the second half, as Simeone's side easily progressed, despite Ramos and Ronaldo also scoring. Afterwards, Madrid's Portuguese superstar made a rare visit to the mixed-zone to apologise to all his team's fans.
Feb. 7, 2015 -- La Liga, Estadio Vicente Calderon: Atletico Madrid 4-0 Real Madrid
Everything came off for Atletico, who were two up inside 18 minutes through a Tiago long-ranger and a Saul Niguez bicycle kick. Second half strikes from Griezmann and Mandzukic gave the final scoreline a historic look at a delirious Calderon.
An injury and suspension-hit Los Blancos side were awful, with their BBC strikeforce stranded up front and ineffective all game. Madrid were still top of the table at this point, but this result turned a wobble into a looming crisis which eventually saw coach Ancelotti sacked in the summer.
Apr. 14, 2015 -- Champions League quarterfinal first leg, Estadio Vicente Calderon: Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid
Madrid dominated possession but were unable to find a way through, with Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak saving from Gareth Bale in the game's best chance. Simeone's side were below their best, although they might have won through Mandzukic late on. Both coaches took a cautious approach and seemed happy for the tie to be decided in the second leg.
Apr. 22, 2015 -- Champions League quarterfinal second leg, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid
Another tight game was still in the balance when Turan was sent off harshly for a second yellow card with just 15 minutes remaining.
Madrid back-up striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez had earlier missed two super chances to score, but with normal time almost up, he swept the ball home from Ronaldo's excellent unselfish assist, and sent Madrid through to the semi-finals.
Oct. 4, 2015 -- La Liga, Estadio Vicente Calderon: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid
New Madrid coach Rafa Benitez saw his side deservedly rewarded for early dominance when Karim Benzema headed home. Things looked even better for the visitors when Keylor Navas saved Griezmann's penalty.
But Benitez's side sat back, and Atletico substitute Luciano Vietto scored an unlikely equaliser with just seven minutes left. A post-game public argument with club captain Ramos was a sign that Benitez would not last long in the job.
Feb. 27, 2016 -- La Liga, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Zinedine Zidane's first "derbi" in charge did not go well as Griezmann's well taken strike early in the second half was enough for a comfortable Atletico win. Simeone said afterwards it had become "natural" for his team to win at the Bernabeu.
Madrid playmakers Isco and James floundered, and Zidane accepted post-game that his team would have to be physically and mentally tougher in future.
