The New York Red Bulls parted ways with defender Karl Ouimette on Monday, while announcing talks with Ronald Zubar over a new deal.
The Red Bulls exercised the options on striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, midfielder Sean Davis and defenders Chris Duvall and Justin Bilyeu, but declined those on Ouimette and Zubar.
"We want to thank Karl for his service to the club over the last two years," Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement. "Despite not picking up Ronald's option, the club is in discussions to bring him back for next season."
Ouimette, a Canada international, made six starts at center-back this season but was not coach Jesse Marsch's preferred choice.
French center-back Zubar made 19 starts, scoring twice despite a number of injuries.
