Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery pays tribute to 'role model' Maxwell

PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery has praised left-back Maxwell ahead of what could be his final Parc des Princes appearance against Caen on Saturday.

Maxwell, 35, joined the deposed champions from Barcelona in 2012 and Emery described him as "a true role model."

The coach told a news conference: "If he leaves, I want that his last minutes are part of a beautiful performance.

"He is an example to the dressing room, to the club. He is a true role model."

Emery also singled out Edinson Cavani, with the Uruguay international striker one goal away from equalling Zlatan Ibrahimovic's record haul of 50 in all competitions in 2015-16.

"When I arrived at the club, I was told to put my confidence in Edinson," he said.

"He has worked hard during this season. As he often says, the most important thing is the collective. However, individually, he has enjoyed a great campaign -- 49 goals. He is also a player who can still develop."

The coach said he felt PSG, who lost their Ligue 1 title to Monaco, could improve next season.

"There are a lot of good players in this squad who can develop and do better than they have this term," he added.

"As far a recruitment is concerned, there is no major need for a lot of players.

"The priority is to find those who can improve the team -- big players, who will also work hard. However, star players are not easy to sign."

Emery was also asked about the reported possibility that director of football Patrick Kluivert could be replaced by either former Porto sporting director Antero Henrique or Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta.

"I am speaking with Patrick each and every day about the present and the future," he said. "Today, he is the sporting director. I do not have an opinion for you."

Thomas Meunier, Layvin Kurzawa, captain Thiago Silva, Marco Verratti, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Hatem Ben Arfa will not feature for PSG against Caen.

"As far as injuries go, Thomas had his ankle operated on earlier in the week," Emery explained.

"Layvin is continuing to recover after his operation. Thiago did not train with the squad and Marco felt a small pain, so he has also not been picked.

"Grzegorz has asked to play with the reserves to get 90 minutes and Hatem will not feature because of technical reasons. Why? I want the best group of 18 players. There is no other reason."
