New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will miss Wednesday night's game against the Boston Bruins with what the team called a neck injury.
He is day to day.
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters Wednesday morning that the club was "investigating" the injury, believed to be related to Lundqvist taking a puck to the throat Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Though Lundqvist went down when he was struck by Brad Malone's shot, he returned to the game and finished with 31 saves. The former Vezina Trophy winner even tweeted out a close-up picture of the puck hitting him in the throat the next day, telling his followers he felt "pretty good" and thanking supporters for their well wishes.
Lundqvist returned to the crease Monday night, recording 33 saves in the team's 6-3 win against the Florida Panthers. He did not practice Tuesday in what the team characterized as a "maintenance" day.
The news came as a surprise Wednesday morning, when it was revealed that backup netminder Cam Talbot would get the start versus the Bruins at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers recalled goaltender Mackenzie Skapski from AHL-Hartford to back up Talbot.
Though there is no immediate timetable for Lundqvist's return, Vigneault reiterated that the goalie is not suffering from a concussion.
