Sources: Jags DC Todd Wash one of only three defensive coaches kept

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars coach Doug Marrone made nearly a clean sweep on the defensive side of the ball on Tuesday, retaining only defensive coordinator Todd Wash, defensive assistant Mike Rutenberg and defensive quality control coach Dan Shamash from Gus Bradley's staff, league sources told ESPN.

Monte Kiffin, who joined the staff as a defensive assistant last March, is among those coaches not retained. Kiffin,76, had been assisting Bradley off and on for eight months on an unpaid basis and was a consultant during the team's search for a defensive coordinator before being hired.

Wash just finished his first season as a defensive coordinator and the Jaguars made significant improvement. They finished sixth in total defense, 19th in rush defense, fifth in pass defense, eighth in third-down defense and 25th in scoring defense. In the previous three seasons under coordinator Bob Babich, the Jaguars ranked 31st in scoring defense, 31st in third-down defense and 29th in total defense.

Wash ran the same 3-4 scheme Bradley brought with him from Seattle when he was hired in 2013. It's unclear at this point whether Wash will continue to do so. Several defensive players -- notably cornerback Jalen Ramsey and safety Tashaun Gipson -- criticized the scheme and the way they were used after the Jaguars' final game of the season.

Ramsey also said a "complete, complete change" in the scheme and staff would be best.

Wash served as the Seahawks' defensive line coach before accompanying Bradley to Jacksonville in 2013. He coached the defensive line for three seasons before being promoted last January.

Rutenberg was the Jaguars' assistant defensive backs coach from 2013 to '15. He assisted Wash with third-down defense last season.

Linebackers coach Robert Saleh, defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker, Daniel Bullocks (assistant defensive backs coach), Scottie Hazelton (assistant linebackers coach) and Aaron Whitecotton (assistant defensive line coach) were all under contract through the 2017 season.
