Phoenix is definitely on the rise.
And among the players who have made the team's resurgence possible in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup is Calvin Abueva, who is averaging 13.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 blocks.
Phoenix coach Louie Alas acknowledges the energetic forward's contribution to the Fuel Masters, who are sitting comfortably in second place with a 5-1 record. For the veteran coach, "The Beast" is a "game-changer."
"I'll say it again, Calvin will be a big help wherever he goes," said Alas. "... His No. 1 strength is his effort. He is really relentless."
His game is tailor-fit for a team that puts a premium on effort -- especially on defense. Six games into the conference, Abueva said he already has a full grasp of the system.
"I know his system now," said Abueva in Filipino after Phoenix rolled to a third straight win at the expense of Magnolia on Sunday. "I know what my role is and I'm thankful for the playing minutes he's giving me."
But Alas was quick to pop the bubble.
The former Alaska deputy coach said while the strong start proves the team powered by explosive import Eugene Phelps is capable of beating traditional contenders after victories over Meralco, TNT, and Magnolia, the Fuel Masters still have their work cut out for them.
"You can't really tell. We are bunched together at the top. We're just trying to win as many games as we can," he said.
Indeed, there's a tough schedule ahead for Phoenix. On Saturday, the Fuel Masters will face a dangerous Ginebra side which is hit by injuries to key players like Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.
Alas said they are refusing to succumb to complacency against the Gin Kings.
"Even though they have a depleted lineup, you still have to bring your A-Game to beat Ginebra," he said.
