Panthers load up practice squad with defensive linemen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Four of the 10 players signed to the Carolina Panthers' practice squad are defensive linemen.

The Panthers still have room to sign one more player because they have an exception for defensive end Efe Obada, a part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program.

All 10 players were with the team before final cuts were made Friday and Saturday:

Here's a look at the Panthers' practice squad:

QB Garrett Gilbert: He was brought in as a fourth quarterback while Cam Newton rehabbed from offseason shoulder surgery. The former SMU star impressed enough that the Panthers will develop him on the practice squad.

WR Keyarris Garrett: The former Tulsa star is on the practice squad for the second straight year after being signed last season as an undrafted free agent.

WR Mose Frazier: He at times flashed during training camp, but not enough to make the 53-man roster. He came into the league last season with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted player out of Memphis. Frazier also spent time on the practice squads of the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.

OT Blaine Clausell: Undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2015, he has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins. He is being developed for possible depth at tackle.

DE Bryan Cox Jr.: The son of three-time Pro Bowler Bryan Cox had a solid training camp, but the undrafted rookie out of Florida was caught up in a numbers game behind ends Julius Peppers, Charles Johnson, Mario Addison, Wes Horton and Daeshon Hall.

DE Zack Moore: The Panthers are the fifth team to give Moore, a sixth-round pick of the Patriots in 2014, a shot.

DE Efe Obada: The Panthers released him to give him a chance to get picked up by another team but brought him back when he wasn't.

DT Eric Crume: Undrafted out of Syracuse in 2015, he spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Green Bay Packers before the Panthers signed him in January. He may have been the closest of any of the practice squad players to making the 53-man roster.

S Damian Parms: An undrafted player out of Nebraska who had 16 tackles during the preseason.

S Dezmen Southward: A third-round pick by Atlanta in 2014, Southward has was signed by Carolina in December after being released by the Indianapolis Colts. He impressed enough during the preseason that he got a couple of mentions from coach Ron Rivera.
