The Chicago Bears re-signed quarterback Connor Shaw and long-snapper Patrick Scales to one-year contracts, the team announced Saturday.

Shaw showed promise in the 2016 preseason before a leg injury against the Kansas City Chiefs in Chicago’s third exhibition game ended his year. Prior to getting hurt, Shaw completed 5-of-6 pass attempts for 68 yards and one touchdown. He completed 4-of-6 attempts for 42 yards and one touchdown in the second week of the preseason at New England.

Shaw appeared in one regular-season game with the Cleveland Browns in 2014, throwing for 177 yards and one interception.

The former South Carolina quarterback will compete for one of the backup spots on the final 53-man roster. The Bears are expected to add several new quarterbacks to the mix between free agency and the draft, but Shaw impressed the coaching staff last year and could have an opportunity to stick if he stays healthy. Chicago offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains worked as the Browns' quarterbacks coach during Shaw’s time in Cleveland.

Scales played in a career-high 16 games last season. He posted one special teams tackle.
