Growing concern over Bears OLB Willie Young's triceps injury

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears outside linebacker Willie Young missed practice on Friday because of a triceps injury, raising concerns about his status for Monday night’s game against Minnesota.

Young -- tied for the team lead in sacks (2.0) -- was listed as limited on Thursday’s injury report.

“We’re not sure where he’s [Young] at right now with his injury,” Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “We still have guys -- we have Pernell McPhee, Sam Acho and Leonard Floyd at outside linebacker. There are other guys we can use on the outside in nickel if need be. We’ll be OK there, I think.”

McPhee’s knee condition improved enough for him to play 34 snaps in Week 4’s blowout loss at Green Bay, but Fangio doesn’t know how much more McPhee can contribute in the event Young is out.

“I’m not sure,” Fangio said. “There was some talk about a pitch count early in the season. That [34 snaps] was a little bit higher than the original one and nobody has said anything, so you know I think it’s more or less up to him right now and see how he’s feeling.”

Besides McPhee, Acho and Floyd, the Bears could choose to elevate practice squad linebackers Isaiah Irving or Howard Jones to the active roster to give the team additional depth on the outside.

In other injury news, linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski (chest) also sat out practice. Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks (foot) and center Hroniss Grasu (hand) were limited.

Fangio said inside linebacker John Timu is expected to handle most of the defensive calls Monday night with Danny Trevathan suspended.
