Cowboys' mood in practice changed when Tyrone Crawford went down

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys have been able to avoid the big injury so far in training camp and they're hoping that continues when they get word on defensive end Tyrone Crawford's right ankle injury.

The Cowboys have had a number of minor injuries, like hamstring strains and shoulder strains, but nothing too serious. But there was a noticeable mood change after Crawford's injury on Tuesday.

After a short period in which the medical staff looked at Crawford, the team drills simply moved down the field a few yards before he was carted off the field.

"Of course, because he's one of our leaders and when you don't know what's happening or what's going on, it's going to change the mood," wide receiver Dez Bryant said. "We finished practice. It's probably not how we wanted to, but we finished it the right way. Hopefully he's doing OK."

After Crawford's injury, linebacker Anthony Hitchens and defensive end Damontre Moore limped off at different times with apparent ankle injuries. Hitchens did not look too bad after practice as he walked off.

Also on Tuesday:

  • Dak Prescott completed 11 of 17 passes in team and 7-on-7 drills, bringing his totals in eight padded practices to 91-for-129. Prescott and tight end Jason Witten connected for two touchdowns. In 7-on-7 work, Witten might have gotten away with a slight push on LB Sean Lee to come down with the Prescott pass along the back line of the end zone. In team drills, Prescott executed a perfect play-fake to RB Ezekiel Elliott, drawing up the defense and hitting Witten down the seam.

  • Backup QB Kellen Moore had his first interception of camp when S Kavon Frazier was able to come down with a tipped ball on a pass to WR Brian Brown. Frazier was closing fast and was able to make a good adjustment on the ball.

  • Rookie DE Taco Charlton heard it from some teammates when he jumped offside on a hard count by rookie QB Cooper Rush. Looking to the seam for TE Geoff Swaim, Rush's pass was incomplete, but the offense was able to get a first down because of the penalty.

  • WR Cole Beasley caught punts for the first time in training camp. He split some work with WRs Ryan Switzer and Lance Lenoir. Beasley returned just three punts in games last season.

  • With DT Cedric Thornton leaving practice early with a hamstring strain, Stephen Paea moved into the nose tackle spot with the first-team defense. He was paired next to Maliek Collins on the interior of the defensive line.

  • CB Nolan Carroll showed some good awareness in red zone work as Prescott looked for Bryant on a scramble drill. Carroll drifted off his responsibility out wide to bat down the pass to Bryant, who opened the play in the slot.
