FRISCO, Texas -- When the Dallas Cowboys come off the bye Sunday at the San Francisco 49ers, they will see a not-so-familiar face as the referee in Ronald Torbert.
Since becoming a referee in 2014, Torbert has worked just two Cowboys games and Dallas has lost both.
Torbert called the 2016 season-opening loss to the New York Giants. The Cowboys were penalized six times for 50 yards, while their division foes were flagged four times for 40 yards. Torbert also worked the last game Tony Romo started for the Cowboys in the 2015 Thanksgiving Day meeting against the Carolina Panthers. The Cowboys had five penalties for 40 yards, and the Panthers were flagged eight times for 53 yards.
Torbert and his crew called what could be Aaron Rodgers' final game of the 2017 season. They called 17 penalties with 15 accepted in Minnesota’s NFC North win. The Packers had eight penalties for 92 yards, and the host Vikings had seven for 65 yards.
Perhaps the crew saw its energy fade in the second half, throwing just two flags. Or perhaps both teams just played cleaner football.
