Von Miller 'cool' with the potential of No. 5 pick

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- As the Denver Broncos' last top-five pick, linebacker Von Miller said he'll just wait and see what impact player the team selects at No. 5 of this year's NFL draft.

The Broncos took Miller with the No. 2 pick of the 2011 draft -- John Elway's first as the team's top football decision-maker. This year is the first time since Miller's selection that they will select a player in draft's opening round higher than No. 20.

"Do I pay attention to the draft? That's just part of the National Football League," Miller said Tuesday, the second day of the team's offseason program. "It's kind of hard not to pay attention to the draft. You've got the playoffs, you've got the Super Bowl and you've got free agency. Then you've got the draft."

Miller also happens to be the only draft pick from Elway's tenure on the current roster who has also been named to a Pro Bowl. Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. has been named to three Pro Bowls in his career, but he made the roster as an undrafted rookie in '11.

Miller was asked Tuesday what player he wanted the Broncos to select at No. 5, but he deferred to the Broncos' personnel staff.

"I have all the faith in the guys that are running the organization, whatever we do with it, whatever we can get -- mock drafts, you talk about paying attention the draft," Miller said. "There have been all types of mock draft with guys coming here and guys going there. Whatever happens, I'm cool with it. We have a Hall of Fame quarterback leading the organization. [Elway] is going to make the best decision for our organization and I'm with it."

The Broncos have vetted the most highly-graded players on the draft board, including the top four quarterbacks (Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, USC's Sam Darnold, UCLA's Josh Rosen and Wyoming's Josh Allen) as well as NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson. If there is an early run on the quarterbacks in the draft and the Broncos decide, after signing Case Keenum to a two-year deal in free agency, they want to go another direction they could still end up with a highly-graded player.

Some teams in the league have Barkley and Chubb among the draft's top two players.

"We have a Hall of Fame quarterback leading the ship, he's going to make a great decision for us," Miller said. "Just let him make those hard decisions. Whatever happens, I'm going to be cool with it. If we take Saquon, I'm cool with that. If we take Chubb, I'm cool with that. If we trade it away, I'm cool with whatever he does with that pick."

Chubb said at the scouting combine this past February that Miller was one of the players in the NFL he admired and said it "would be great" to play on the same team as Miller. Chubb, with 26 tackles for loss this past season, is considered one of the most polished pass-rushers in the draft.

"He's [Raiders defensive end] Khalil Mack and Von Miller put together," Miller said with a smile. "He is a great player. I would love to have him on my team. You don't come across guys like that often. Having the No. 5 pick in the draft, I hope we don't have a high pick like that for a while. If we could steal a player like that, I'm all for it."
